Call for Papers: Second AMEPPA and SESAME Conference

The Association for Middle Eastern Public Policy and Administration (AMEPPA) and ASPA's Section on Effective and Sound Administration in the Middle East (SESAME) is pleased to announce the convening of its Second Conference on November 14 and 15, 2013, at Atilim University in Ankara, Turkey. The conference is also the Second Global Conference on Public Policy and Administration on the Middle East.

We are asking scholars both in the Middle East and around the world to participate in this important conference and be part of a scholarly movement dedicated to public service and public interest in the Middle East. Professionals and academics from all countries and territories and of all nationalities are welcome to participate as presenters (upon acceptance of an abstract or panel) and as conference attendees.

UNPAN-AP Editorial Department Observes 2012 International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction

The International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is commemorated on 13 October. The theme of the 2012 IDDR is "Women and Girls - the [in]Visible Force of Resilience". To observe this special event, UNPAN-AP Editorial Department collects about 80 documents with an aim of raising people's awareness in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation process. The series of documents, mainly composed of country profiles, case studies, and analytical reports, show active involvements of governments from all countries in policy, planning and implementation processes for disaster reduction.

The report entitled Monitoring of Information (Internet) Resources of Public Authorities of Georgia by Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), Georgia is now available on UNPAN. Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe's new Constitution Gazetted
The Zimbabwe government on Thursday gazetted the country's new constitution, which President Robert Mugabe had signed into law just hours earlier, paving the way for the proclamation of dates for the next general election. Publication of the new Constitution in an Extraordinary Government Gazette, just a few hours after receiving presidential assent, signals the determination of Mugabe to have elections held on or before June 29 this year when the existing Parliament expires.

South Africa: All South African Public Servants may have to retrain
Public service minister Lindiwe Sisulu wants to unify national, provincial and local government with a bill affecting 1.6 million staff. Every public servant in South Africa will have to be retrained if a bill to align national, provincial and local government in the country is passed. According to an article on South Africa's Business Day Live, public service minister Lindiwe Sisulu has said the country's 1.6 million public servants would all need training if the Public Administration Bill were to be passed. Directors-general would also have to sit a compulsory exam, the minister reportedly said earlier this week.

South Africa: President Zuma to Lead SA Delegation to AU Summit
President Jacob Zuma will lead a South African delegation to the 21st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly. The summit, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, coincides with the historic 50th anniversary Celebrations of the Organisation of African Unity/ African Union. The theme of the summit is “Pan-Africanism and the African Renaissance”.
