Description: 
Since 1971 the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), through its Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM), and the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) have organized twenty-one interregional seminars and symposia. The 22nd UN/INTOSAI Symposium will be held in Vienna, Austria from 5 to 7 March 2013. The participants of the Symposium will deliberate on the topic “Audit and Counselling by SAIs: Risks and Opportunities, as well as Possibilities for Engaging Citizens”, which was chosen on the basis of a survey carried out among all INTOSAI members. This threefold topic will allow the participants to exchange views and details on new approaches towards audit and counselling by SAIs, risks in audit and counselling and opportunities to enhance independence, effectiveness and efficiency as well as the possibilities of citizen engagement and its potential benefits in regard to the above mentioned aspects. 

During the Symposium, representatives of UNDESA and INTOSAI, its participating members as well as the additional participants will have the opportunity to reflect about the topic. As a goal of the Symposium, the different regional points of view and the comparison between different levels of development as well as the varying current situations of historically different models of public auditing will be part of the reflections. Participants will deepen their insights in aspects of sustainability in auditing and communication of SAIs. Furthermore the Symposium will follow up on risk management, risk analysis and internal control. The participants will also concentrate on transparency, the fight against corruption, misuse of public funds and the role of citizen engagement.
