Start Date: |

End Date: |

Venue: |
Library Auditorium, University of the Western Cape |
Description: |
The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) was founded in 1995 as a specialist unit in the School of Government, Economic and Management Sciences Faculty at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Cape Town. Since then, PLAAS has developed a proven track record of undertaking high-quality research on land and agrarian reform, poverty, and natural resource management in South Africa and the southern African region.
PLAAS is hosting a special seminar entitled ‘Changing Patterns of Food Production and Consumption in the World and in Africa’ on 14 February 2014 in the Western Cape.
Increasing urbanisation and income levels are well known to lead to higher demands for animal foods and greater dietary diversity, including reliance on fast food. So with a continually-growing population in an increasingly urbanised world, what will be on our plates tomorrow? Meat or fish or algae and vegetables? Organic food, slow or fast food, meaty, vegetarian or vegan?
The topic will be debated by Professor Louise O. Fresco, University of Amsterdam. Prof Fresco is well known for her energetic defence of “Big Food” and her critical stance on the politics of the food sovereignty movement. Her views are sure to evoke reflection and debate.

Time: 13h00 - 14h30
