CONFERENCES & PRESENTATIONS

In addition to creating and producing new Speaking Books, we participated in a number of international conferences and events, including: Attending the Drug Information Association (DIA) event in Philadelphia where our Speaking Books on clinical trials generated much interest and led to development of new clinical trials Speaking Books; guest speaking at the well attended CDC National Conference on Health Communication in Atlanta, and presentating to Rotary Clubs in USA, Kenya and South Africa.

We partnered with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), Africa's largest mental health support and advocacy NGO, Pfizer and the International Council Nurses (ICN) to launch their new "Wellness Tree - Growing Your Health" Speaking Book, which explains the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent non-communicable diseases. The launch took place at two well-attended events outside of Johannesburg, one at a high school and the other in the Orange Farm Community. The audience, especially the youth, were excited to learn about this information and to receive a free Speaking Book. The two day event was a great success, check out some of our pictures!

This was followed by the first of our series of "Teen Suicide School Prevention" talks in partnership with Rotary and SADAG. Counselors met with over a thousand at risk students in their classrooms to discuss the topic and gave out free Speaking Books to the classrooms. South Africa faces a major problem as one in five of its youth may attempt suicide. Depression is not easily understood or recognized by much of the population, particularly the youth. With Rotary's help, we are able to reach more children and parents to educate them about the problem. We created a wonderful video featuring highlights from the event and you can see some amazing photos captured throughout the day.

THE YEAR AHEAD

Last year’s momentum has continued into 2013 with a new order from UNICEF Ethiopia for a bilingual Speaking Book in Amharic and Oromifa, a new project for Merck, and finalizing our first Speaking Book to be distributed in the Gambia.

We are also excited about our increasing involvement with Rotary Club. Not only are we planning more “Teen Suicide Prevention” school days with SADAG and local Rotary Clubs, but in partnership with Rotary International, Pakistan and Nigeria, we are looking to create Speaking Books to educate low literacy communities on the vital need to vaccinate children against Polio. The Rotary "End Polio Now" campaign has been an incredible achievement to eradicate polio globally, but Pakistan and Nigeria still require further effort. It is a privilege for Speaking Books to be invited to play a part in this initiative and we look forward to making our contribution in finally ridding the world of this disease.

The success and growth of Speaking Books is entirely dependent on meeting our clients’ exact requirements that enable them to communicate health messages that will be seen, read, heard and understood by the communities they wish to reach. We always appreciate your feedback and any ideas for new topics or ways we can make our program more effective.
