South Africa: SA Fish Farm in Finals of Global Innovation Award
Source: SA - the Good News
Source Date: Thursday, November 14, 2013
Focus: Citizen Engagement, Institution and HR Management
Country: South Africa
Created: Nov 14, 2013

Other entries include a backpack for transporting biogas, solar-powered water purifiers and phone chargers, sanitary pads made from papyrus and an all-terrain wheelchair made from bicycle parts (details of all finalists in attached).
With urbanisation and unemployment increasing, and with marine fish stocks depleting, the demand is rising for sustainably produced and community-based fish production.
The Fish Farm is a world-first, designed to quickly and easily deliver a profitable, affordable and mobile aquaculture business to poor communities.
It was invented and patented by Alan Fleming from The Business Place in Philippi as a simple and environmentally-friendly way of ensuring food security, creating jobs and wealth.
It immediately supplies an affordable, commercially viable, transportable, and replicable aquaculture business into poor urban or rural communities.
Alan Fleming says “The Fish Farm is South African innovation in action. With urbanisation on the increase and unemployment a crisis, it demonstrates globally that amazing solutions to inner-city intensive protein production, new livelihoods which create new sources of wealth, and less reliance on a depleting marine environment are completely possible.”
Energy for the containerised fish farm can be obtained from solar power; and waste water from the fish farm can be supplied as fertilizer to local vegetable farmers.
Winners of the competition will be announced by an international jury at a ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, on 30 October, with prize money of more than R1,3 million on offer.
There are 23 finalists and until 21 October the public have the opportunity to vote online for their personal favourite at www.empowering-people-award.siemens-stiftung.org
