e-Government Initiatives Highlighted in Bahrain

Manama: Governance in public service and e-Government initiatives and innovation were the focus of workshops conducted in Bahrain as part of the 2013 United Nations Public Service Forum Day and Awards events.
On the second day of the events, held for the first time in the region, seven workshops were conducted in parallel for the delegates.

The workshop on “Promoting Collaborative e-Governance through Innovation and ICTs” highlighted the importance of adopting the open data platforms, new generation of social networking spaces and smart government methods to improve the transparency in public service. The workshop recommended mobilising the capabilities of the private sector to play a better role in improving the public service.

A workshop focusing on the concept of transfer of innovations for improved public service delivery in Least Developed Countries (LDC), urged stakeholders of public service, civil service and private sector to initiate established relationship between providers of innovative solutions and users in LDC through field visits and exchange of information.
The “Fostering Participation in the Context of the Post-2015 Development Agenda” workshop discussed the Millennium Development Goals and post-2015 Development Agenda and ESCAW’s previously issued reports. The workshop also discussed the concepts of governance, citizenship and the best ways of public engagement and interaction with government administrations, Adib Nehme, Regional Adviser on Governance and State Building, said.

Ways to empower women through the exchange of insights and joint coordination between participating countries were reviewed at the “Transforming Public Service Delivery to Advance Gender Equality” workshop. Communicating international practices, Najat Zarrouk, director of training for administrative and technical staff at Morocco’s interior ministry, promoted Gender-Responsive Delivery of Public Services as a model of gender integrity.

The “Creating on Enabling Environment for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development through Innovation and eGovernment” workshop was attended by representatives from 18 countries.
Participants at the “Leadership for Transformational Government” focused on leadership as they used the session to exchange views and experiences to meet the challenges through out-of-the-box solutions”.
The GCC e-Governments workshop, “Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) Initiatives Towards eGovernance and Sustainable Public Services” highlighted the region’s best practices and projects in the fields of e-Government and innovation. Delegates from various GCC countries presented papers to shed light on strategic GCC projects and experiences, such as initiatives aiming at establishing integrated GCC portal and a unified domain.
