SUVA, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Republic of Fiji and the Republic of Liberia formalized diplomatic relations in a ceremony at the Liberian Mission to the United Nations in New York on Thursday local time, the Fijian government announced Friday in Suva.
The Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations, Ambassador Marjon Kamara and her Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations between the two nations, Fiji's Ministry of Information said in a statement.
The communique expresses the desire of the Republics of Fiji and Liberia to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties and cooperation between the two peoples, said the statement, adding the communique affirms the relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for state sovereignty, equality among states, independence, territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
During the formalization ceremony, Kamara expressed Liberia's gratitude to Fiji for its ongoing provision of police personnel to the United Nations Mission in Liberia.
