DAVOS, Switzerland – President Benigno S. Aquino III is still reluctant to support proposed amendments to the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines.

Before he considers such proposal, the President said there should be “concrete evidence” that Charter reforms would serve the interest of Filipinos before foreigners.

Aquino made the remarks after several American businessmen have pushed for amendments to the Constitution that would remove limits to foreign ownership of Philippine enterprises. The American executives were part of the forum recently organized to attract them to invest in the Philippines.

“It is important that our Constitution serves our interest before the interests of foreigners,” Aquino said in a press conference last Friday here.

“Nobody has demonstrated the absolute certainty that if we amend the Constitution, there is corresponding gain,” he added.

Aquino pointed out that the country was able to achieve an impressive economic growth in recent months without changing the Constitution.

“We attained 7.1 percent in the third quarter of 2012, 6.5 percent on the average for the three. Those who have been requesting us (to change the Constitution) did not achieve those same numbers,” he said.

Asked if he is standing by his position against Charter change during his term, Aquino said: “Before we do anything, they must show concrete evidence that it will help the country.” (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
