Online services are central to improving Public Services and generating value for money, says Alastair O’Brien, Public Services Sector Director at Amor Group.

In this age of austerity, he says, organisations are afraid to take the first step and are instead looking to others to take the lead. With so many budget cuts and services having to trim the fat, the public sector are trying to create innovative new ways to deliver the same services but at a fraction of the cost.

Traditionally, he continues, new ways of thinking and changes in management structure have lead to mounting costs, but due to the impact the digital revolution has has nationwide, digital- and cloud- based technologies and structures have become commonplace and cheap to utalise, and he urges the public sector to capitalise on this.

More and more public sector organisations are choosing this path rather than the lengthy, time and money consuming "public procurements". He says that "digital by default is a key Government aspiration", and that online transactions are on the rise, sharply.

In order to achieve digital by default, the system must be consistently easy to use, he added, and that engaging with the user and taking their preferences into account is key to providing a good service.
