MOSCOW, July 8 (RAPSI) – Russian civil servants will be banned from signing contracts with companies run by their relatives under legal amendments to the law on corruption sent to the State Duma by a group of Russian lawmakers, Izvestia reported on Monday.

The amendments will oblige federal and municipal organizations to prohibit payments to companies whose managers or accountants are close relatives of the managers or accountants of state organizations, Izvestia writes.

The amendments define “close relatives” as parents, spouses, children, grandchildren, grandparents, sisters and brothers, as well as the sisters, brothers, parents, grandparents and children of spouses, Izvestia said.

Those caught breaking the proposed law face dismissal.

A second amendment prohibits close relatives from working at the same federal or municipal organization if their jobs are directly subordinated or involve control of one another, with the exception of federal and municipal educational establishments, libraries and cultural centers, as well as rural medical and pharmaceutical establishments in the countryside.

“We all remember the example of former Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, who set special conditions for tenders so that they were won by his wife’s construction company,” said Duma Deputy Viktor Shudegov, one of those sponsoring the bill.
