Introduction

Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM) publications are published by the United Nations, as products of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Many of its publications are recurring, such as the United Nations E-Government Survey.

Since third quarter 2010, the Division has piloted a new approach for its publications programme, beginning with the release of United Nations E-Government Survey 2010 as an eBook, available for Apple iPod and iPad, Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Sony Reader. The E-Government Survey 2010 is the seventh title ever to be released as an eBook by UN Publications out of the entire family of United Nations titles.

The use of expanded e-publishing by the Division began under the leadership of Haiyan Qian, in collaboration with United Nations Publications, as part of an overall plan to harmonize and update the delivery of the Divison's products through mobile devices. Intending to save on paper printing and shipping costs for distribution at major events, DPADM developed a strategy to lower print volumes by consolidating publications into an e-Library and by developing electronic publications for distribution through major online platforms for consumption on mobile devices, including Apps and eBooks. The Division's first App, UN Innovations in Public Governance, launched at the United Nations Public Service Day Awards and Forum in June 2011 for iPhone and iPad.

Accessibility of information is an ongoing vital issue for the Division, the Department and UN as a whole. Printed books will remain available through UN Publications and limited print runs will be made. Electronic publishing is not intended to completely replace print.
